The science behind the sale

THC% measures strength. It doesn’t measure fit.

Fit is what keeps a customer coming back — and it’s taught, not guessed. CannaReps teaches the skill of connecting each customer to the product that actually fits, so they leave sure of their choice — not gambling on “you’ll just have to try it and see.”

CannaReps trains cannabis sales teams and certifies them as Cannabis Sommeliers™ — so the people on your floor sell with confidence instead of guesswork.

The two conversations

The same customer, the same shelf, two different budtenders.

One asks nothing.

“What are you looking for?” — “Something to relax with.” Points at whatever’s cheap and high-THC. A $30 pack of pre-rolls. Ninety seconds, done.

Basket $30

The other asks.

What’s the vibe tonight, relaxed or social? How much can they usually handle, and what have they liked before? Something to inhale or ingest? What’s the budget? Turns out the customer wants to unwind without getting flattened — so instead of the strongest thing on the shelf, they get a $38 pack matched to that, a $12 single of something new to try alongside it, and $17 worth of edibles to extend their high or for when they don’t want to smoke. A quick note on how to tell the difference next time, and the customer leaves knowing exactly why they bought what they bought.

Basket $67

$30 versus $67. Same store, same shelf, same customer. The difference is what the budtender knew — and the second customer is the one who comes back.

Illustrative of a consultative sale — not a guaranteed outcome.

How do you recommend a product you can’t open?

Sealed packaging, no sampling, a customer asking what something’s actually like. It’s the hardest part of the job — and it’s the part nobody trains.

The answer isn’t guessing better. It’s reading the product itself — what’s in it, how it was grown and processed, the format, the flavour, the safety profile — closely enough that the label becomes almost beside the point.

Then reading the customer just as closely: what they’re after, what they’ve liked before, what they want to avoid, what they want to spend.

That’s the Cannabis Expression Compass™ — the core tool in the CannaReps system. It matches the two.

The result is a budtender who can recommend with confidence at any price point, from a $5 gummy to a top-shelf ounce — without ever opening the package.

That’s the kind of recommendation a customer trusts. And the budtender they trust is the one they ask for by name — the one whose tip jar shows it.

The science, briefly

Most people in this industry have never been told why two products with nearly identical terpene reports can smell completely different. It’s because terpenes aren’t the whole aromatic story — volatile sulfur compounds, esters and thiols carry a lot of what your nose registers, and standard lab panels often don’t test for them.

Your staff have noticed this. Nobody has ever explained it to them.

That’s the level this training works at — deep enough to build authority, practical enough to use on the next customer.

Who this is for

Two ways in. Pick the one that fits.

I want a team I can count on to drive sales

(owners and managers)

You want a team that holds standard on every shift, sells premium as fluently as value, and gives you a reason to stop circling back to a store that should already run itself. Team training is delivered on-site, where your staff get hands-on skills that drive sales and loyalty.

Or see team training →

I want to be the budtender who builds a loyal following

(budtenders and brand reps)

Stop getting caught out by the customer — or the budtender — who knows more than you do. Start with debunking the Indica-Sativa myth and selling beyond THC and price. Four levels, starting free, up to the Cannabis Sommelier™ credential: earned by exam, and yours no matter where you work next.

For brands

Get the Reorder, Not the Rejection — Free, Self-Paced, No New Hires

A rep who knows their product inside out still loses the account when a budtender asks how it stacks up against the three SKUs next to it on the shelf. A spec sheet doesn’t defend a shelf position — floor knowledge does. That same rep turns the question into the reason the reorder happens.

If you’re a brand: train your whole field team — and grow shelf share, sell-through velocity, and brand trust on every floor that carries you. No field team? We train the budtenders selling your product directly. Talk to Julie →

Why this and not a compliance course

SellSafe, Selling It Right and CanSell teach your staff what they’re legally allowed to say. They’re required, and they’re not competitors — they’re a different thing entirely.

None of them teach anyone to sell. That’s the gap: your staff can pass a compliance exam and still just take orders instead of driving up basket size.

Cannabis Sommelier™ certification is the sales and product training that sits on top — plant science, sensory evaluation, and a seven-step consultative framework, built for the floor.

Allesen Skead

Owner, The Reef Store by the Lake

“Before CannaReps, we were competing on price and losing. Julie taught us to compete on expertise. Our staff went from order-takers to trusted advisors. Customers now ask for product recommendations by name... Our margins are up, our team is confident, and we’re finally profitable.”

Average basket size moved to $65–67, with top staff hitting $70–75. Slow months that used to run $90,000 hit $140,000. $18,000 of dead stock cleared — most of it inside three weeks.

Single-store result. Individual outcomes vary with market, inventory and implementation.

Gary Hehar

Owner, Local Cannabis Co.

“We’re in one of the most competitive markets in Canada. There are 80 stores within a 5km radius... CannaReps taught us how to compete on expertise instead. Our premium SKU velocity increased by 127%. Customers are now asking for our recommendations by name.”

AOV lifted 28%, from $35 to $45 — and it held. $25,000/week in additional revenue, sustained past the initial post-training bump.
